SEGA On Reviving Its Classics: 'We Have Another Virtua Fighter Being Developed'

It’s no secret that SEGA is planning to dip back into its classics catalogue in the coming years – the company has already confirmed new Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio games recently. Well, now you can officially add Virtua Fighter to that list – another entry in the series is currently “being developed” at SEGA HQ.

This new information comes from a recent VGC interview with SEGA’s Justin Scarpone, who talked about the team developing new titles that “fall into that legacy bucket”. Here’s this section of the interview, and what he had to say about Virtua Fighter:

“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”

Around about a year ago, rumours of a new Virtua Fighter game were doing the rounds ahead of The Game Awards 2023 – with SEGA itself also saying the team was “evaluating” another entry in the series. Well, it looks like those evaluations have now progressed to active development over at the Japanese company.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears on high alert for more news on Virtua Fighter, but it’s looking like longtime fans can soon expect another entry in this series – after almost two decades since the last proper mainline release.
